Weihai, surrounded by the sea on three sides and boasting nearly 1,000 kilometers of coastline, is renowned for its beautiful landscapes, including beaches, islands, reefs, and forests. As a northern coastal city, it features a harmonious blend of blue and green, with seasonal changes in the colors of both sea and land. Strolling the coastline, we pass parks, beaches, dikes, and harbors, encountering locals engaged in various activities. The ocean has shaped the city's landscape and lifestyle, with coastal parks, tourist streets, and harbor fish markets defining life in Weihai.

"W.A.Y Coast" stretches 6 kilometers along the coastline. The project spans five sites along the coastal avenue, featuring beaches, pine forests, cliffs, and grass slopes leading to the sea. The area also holds traces of history, with abandoned cottages, fish ponds, and industrial relics.

How to activate this diverse terrain and the blend of natural and man-made elements, giving it new life and vitality? The design strategy connects these diverse landscapes and elements, creating a cohesive 6-kilometer coastline that reflects the changing seasons and the sea’s story.

Design Concept: Mountain-Sea Connection
Along the coastline of W.A.Y Coast, TO SEA, TO SAIL is the site with the most dramatic topographical changes. One side features mountainous terrain and pine forests on the cliffs, while the other opens up to a vast bay with a nearly 20-meter elevation difference. Accessibility is key to activating this site. We adopt a "Mountain-Sea Connection" strategy, using a trail network to link the buildings, existing seaside plaza, and shipwreck landscape, overcoming topographical barriers and creating a unified tourism bay that blends water sports and mountain leisure.

The "Mountain-Sea Connection" network enriches the walking experience, with the form of the scenic pathways continuously changing with the terrain. In areas with steep slopes, the path folds and densifies into a zigzag aerial walkway, winding through pine forests. At times, it juts out on rocky cliffs, forming viewing platforms overlooking the entire sports bay. The buildings in the area naturally blend in, emerging from the network paths and mountain terrain. Their geometric shapes follow the network lines, resembling various forms of rocks, creating a dialogue between the mountains and the sea, an "artificial nature."

Marine Sports Club
Floating above the harbor, extending horizontally along the mountain contours, the Marine Sports Club forms an "ark"-like coastal architectural shape. The forward-leaning posture of the building entrance resembles the bow of a ship cutting through the wind, combining dynamism with strength.

Cape Cafe
Hidden within the pine forest, Cape Coffee sits at the edge of the cliff, at the end of the sightseeing path. Like a "falling stone" from the sky, it sits atop the mountain terrace, creating a lighthouse effect from the sea. Winding up the entrance ramp, you reach the café at the highest point, where a turn reveals a sweeping sea view.

Visitor Center
The visitor center is located at the corner of the cycling path on W.A.Y Coast, backed by the forest and sprawling low to the ground. The design preserves the site's original trees and gentle slopes, creating a corridor beneath the trees.

Pine Forest Restaurant
The forest restaurant grows out of the highest slope, resembling a rock embedded in the hillside when viewed from a distance. Against the blue sea, the sloped roof reaches skyward, offering an open viewing spot where visitors can feel the dialogue between wind and sea. The restaurant stretches over the top of the pine forest, facing the sea, offering a pleasing and unobstructed view.

Hillside Viewing Platform
The viewing platform is hidden at the mid-mountain height of the rocky cliffs. Travelers approach from above, passing through a darkened passage before they are greeted by an open view. Two walls embedded in the rock support a calm water surface, where the horizon blends seamlessly with the sea and sky. Below, stairs and platforms offer a unique perspective of the ocean.

Design Concept: Mega Landscape
The TO SEA, TO SEE site is located on an open highland by the sea, featuring abandoned industrial facilities, pavilions, coastal huts, and a mini temple, creating a diverse and eclectic atmosphere. The entire site is organized with a branching structure, forming a "Mega Landscape." Extending from the cycling path to the ocean, it branches out, creating a series of diverse and intriguing architectural forms, such as a performance venue, viewing platforms, a sea god temple, and an art museum on the reef, each offering unique scenes and content at the ocean's edge.

The design sets scenes around core functions, such as cultural creativity, dining, gatherings, and leisure. At the same time, it prioritizes discussions on earth art, artist residencies, and exhibition operations, proposing potential planning concepts. The existing buildings and structures on the site are upgraded through spatial transformation and material expression, resulting in a series of unique and engaging architectural prototypes, all of which coexist harmoniously within the "Mega Landscape."

Oil Tank Gallery and Art Restaurant
The site's original two oil tanks are repurposed, one for cultural exhibitions and the other as a restaurant, connected by a glass corridor. The original terrace layout around the oil tanks is preserved and integrated into the "mega landscape." The external corridor hanging above the oil tanks forms an aerial art gallery with 360-degree views.

The Lighthouse
The lighthouse, made from an abandoned small oil tank, serves as the highest point of the site. The screen hanging from the tower serves as an electronic display for cultural events at the art hub. From the sea, the glowing screen also creates a lighthouse effect. Inside the tower, a lightweight spiral staircase winds up to the lookout at the top. The tower's interior walls showcase local artists' work, creating a "spiral art gallery."

演艺场A&B
Performance Plaza A&B
Performance Plazas A and B serve as venues for small music festivals, seaside markets, and outdoor movies. Their separate design allows for flexible, multi-scenario operations. The elevated ground landscape, resembling a "ship’s bow" or "sea waves," serves as outdoor steps for the performance space or as a backdrop, enclosing the area.

Unused Service Building - Sea Breeze Cafe
The design incorporates the existing service building, blending it into the overall mega landscape. Retain the existing building structure and reorganize the space through the intervention of walls. The original building evolves into a "floating" sea-view platform. Below are the Sea Breeze Café and public restrooms, serving as supporting leisure facilities for the art hub.

"Big Picture Frame" Landscape Installation
The site's original "Big Picture Frame" structure is preserved, becoming another "gateway to the sea" at the art hub. Its inner walls are replaced with reflective materials, including mirror and ripple mirrors. Art installations are added at the framing points, turning it into a content-rich photo spot and offering various perspectives of the sea.

Coastal Hut - Split Gallery
Inspired by artist Matta-Clark's "Cutting ", the original coastal house is transformed into a "split" house, becoming a "Split Gallery" for showcasing resident artists' works. The renovated art gallery preserves the original layout and scenic advantages of the hut. The exterior walls of the museum is covered with mosaics, symbolizing that "this is not a real house." The facade can change colors during public events and themed exhibitions. The "Split Gallery" features large sea-view windows, with interior mirror-reflective materials that enhance the surreal experience of the art space against the ocean backdrop.

Temple - Earth Art
The mini temple on the reef, left by the indigenous people, represents the sea god worship of the Jiaodong region, symbolizing peace and hope. The existing coastal huts, centered around the Temple, is considered as a whole。 The unique reef terrain is also incorporated into the design. Through an artistic and installation-based design approach, the circular boardwalk on the sea enhances the ritualistic feel of the mini temple. The use of reflective materials makes the boardwalk subtly blend into the surroundings, highlighting the presence of the temple.

Design Concept: Flower Fields and Grass Cottage

The HALL OF HEARTS site is backed by a beach and located on a grassy area between a flower field and a heart-shaped lake, where an unused building exists. We transformed this building into a wedding hall, using this highly ceremonial function as the core. By restructuring the site's axis, we integrated the flower fields and natural lake into the spatial sequence of the wedding hall, creating a wedding march that flows through nature with a strong sense of ceremony.

The Ceremony Hall
The architectural prototype draw inspiration from Weihai's local seaweed houses. We integrated the original building with a complete roof design, using traditional materials. In plan, we extended the two central axes, creating a waterfront walkway on the lakeside and a viewing platform on the seaside. The walkway runs through the building, strengthening the ceremonial axis while enhancing the connection between the lake and the coastline.

The interior space of the wedding hall is reorganized through the intervention of walls, forming a cross-shaped traffic flow, with the ceremony hall, café, preparation room, and courtyard placed in the four quadrants. Along the main path, the iconic high-walled façade guides the entrance, with a wedding bell hanging at the top. The ceremonial venue faces the flower fields, where the flowers and seaweed houses intertwine, creating a dreamy, romantic atmosphere.

Design Concept: Deck Paradise
FISH & FRIENDSHIP is a waterfront site with a small beach, abandoned fish farms, and a sea-facing platform, aiming to become a recreational space for fishing, camping, and leisure. The design builds upon the existing fishpond area, enhancing the axial relationship to form a polygonal grid. Within this grid, ramps connecting different levels, a raised "bow" style open-air theater, and integrated support spaces are arranged.

The transformed site resembles a ship docked at the shore, with a fishing platform on its polygonal deck. Within this grid system, the deck, open-air theater, arcade, and pine towers blend seamlessly, creating a dynamic and layered overall layout.

Microfishing Center
The Sea Fishing Center is transformed from the gray space beneath the site entrance ramp, facing the seawall, into a seasonal integrated service reception center. The sloping roof formed by the ramp creates a unique spatial effect inside the building.

磐石
Rock Installation
Inspired by Yayoi Kusama's "Pumpkin" at the Setouchi Triennale, the original sea-facing platform and stone pillars are transformed into a floating rock, becoming the theme installation and a popular photo spot at the Microfishing Park. The "rock" splits in the center, revealing smooth, reflective steps. The strong contrast between the interior and exterior symbolizes the ancient and the future, guiding people toward the stars and the sea.

Folding Arcade and Pine Tower
At the site of the original coastal huts, the deck folds along the retaining wall to form a seaside resting corridor, providing shade and shelter for microfishing activities. The Pine Tower, transformed from one of the bigger coastal huts, serves as the vertical connection between the highland and the coastline, with a viewing platform at the top.
